« Apollonian energy , Dionysian energy »

Ying and yang ? Light and darkness, shape and energy, Apollo and Dionysos.

Two principles which conflict and complement each other.

During the workshop we will explore our body as breath, movement and voice, related to Apollo and Dionysos primordial energies.

Power of light, symmetry, harmony and transcendence of the Apollonian presence and power of earth, fire, ecstasy of the dionysian action shall be expressed

through the body with movement and sound.

At the same time we will work on some elements of Japanese mythology :

-Amaterasu, female deity, close to Apollo's sun energy

-Susano, male deity and Amanozume, female deity, both related to dionysian energy.

Thanks to those elements we will explore Apollo and Dionysos's male and female energies, as two sides of a same face.

Through Greek and Japanese's mythologies, beyond Europe and Asia, we will try to reach some archetypes of the humanity.

Residency in Pyrenees , dance in nature fields full 6days. We dance most of time outside in fields, with stones, trees, greens, wind, sunrise,
stars... if the weather is good, one day inside a cave or river under the mountain, otherwise there is a nice practice room.

 
There is each day between 8 and 9 hours of practice, in the morning we start by 2h30 of basics: warming up physical and energetic by movement, intention and voice, Some day we'll be all the day in the nature, We'll dance with different element: stones, trees, sun, rain (if it's rain!), fire... There is two night sessions, we'll practice different kind of walking, and the last day is non stop improvisation day, each participant can make solo or duo in the place you choose.

Any small life has own life time. The butterfly life has birth and death in the short arch of time. 27nights and 27days is their whole life or one measure. As the butterfly feels whole life in 4weeks, we explore how deep we feel our own life and presence through this 4weeks. And at the same time, we explore how we express it on the stage through this 4weeks Butoh workshop.

 * we devide 4weeks into 4 themes.
-1st week     Four seasons of life, life circulation, transformation. principal basic of JINEN Butoh training.
-2nd weeks  Feel ourself as part of nature.  Meet the nature where our body come from. workshop in nature.
-3rd weeks   Butoh dance mix with other kind of dance, physical movements, theatre and clown.
-4th weeks    Stand still with your all presence, and dance your life in front of audience. 

 
   * long performance
On July 28, as the final presentation, we will have long performance day with each participants solo or duo in studio,
and group improvisation, butoh procession in the city of pontedera. Like park in Pontedera, street in the town, square of station,
riverside with sunset, etc. 
*Please bring any costume as you prefer, and the shoes which you can dance with.  ( white painting, etc.. )
 
 *Max participants: 25.
* This workshop is ment for dancers, actors, performers and person who has physical training back ground.
   It is desirable to have Butoh dance/ workshop experience in the past, since it is intensive 4weeks workshop.
 
*Date and time : 2th-28th July 2012, from Monday to Friday( 7 hours per day). Sat day performance day
 from afternoon.
*At : workshop will be held mainly inside studio of Spatio NU. and natureside (on 2nd week), and site specific location occasionally.
*Everyday at the end of class, there will be solo improvisation .
*Some Friday, we will make site specific butoh dance in various location in Toscana.
*Every weekend on Saturday,  participants can bring  her/his own solo work.
*From the third week, the workshop will be accompanied by live music by Hiroko Komiya.
*Participants must send her/his curriculum vitae with a description of her/his motivation to join in this workshop.
*Accomodation will be arranged by Spatio NU, the detailed info will be announced when you contact.

Dance of a Tragic Figure II: Jinen Butoh as Orphic Descent Into the Role"
Dates: June 2nd-9th, 2012  *Atsushi teach until 8 June

64 contact hours offered by the Imalis Center for Ancient Hellenic Theatre of Epidauros in partnership with the Township of Epidauros.  A total immersion in the physical context of ancient drama in the spirit of its ancestral sources.  Entering the ancient tragic role is an Orphic journey through the primordial “goat-song,” in which the voice of the body that is moved to song, is raised upon the goat-dance.   The setting of the mask as artifact upon the head of the performer, is both crowning and initiating act.  Jinen Butoh, for us, is like the goat-dance of the ancient Technicians of Dionysos.  Through this intensive, our ensemble and guests develop the movement and dance foundations of the ancient tradition of danced and sung theatrical performance in its healing dimension.

The theme for this Butoh workshop project is to dance the Yin Yang; to express the various souls that live in the vast cycle of JINEN - the cycle of day and night, life and death. In this workshop, we will focus especially on embracing the souls that were excluded or pushed away by the society or suffered from mental and physical disturbances, and get into them and dance them. Through dancing these souls, we encounter the darkness within ourselves and we keep dancing until we liberate them from the concept of darkness, perceive them as a real effusion of the life and change them into light. While creating the final solo presentation, Takenouchi will give participants advice in which physical and spiritual conditions they should face Butoh and how to turn the movement sleeping within them into techniques.

Residency JINEN Butoh workshop in nature of the Pyrenees  /south France

We'll dance, eat and sleep in gite with a large and lightfull practice room, and different kind of nature feeling around.

We dance most of time outside with trees, with stones, with wind, with sun rise, with stars... if the weather is good, maybe one day inside a cave or river under the mountain, otherwise there is a nice practice room.

                                  

* This is 6 days full, from monday 10h30 am to sunday 9h30 am.

We sleep in dormitory or camping. The food is cooked already, we'll do washing dishes.

Some day we'll be all the day in the nature,

We'll dance with different element: stones, trees, sun, rain (if it's rain!), fire...

There is two night sessions, We'll practice different kind of walking,

C’est le tremblement de terre recent du Japon
qui m’a inspire cette choregraphie.
Terre-mere,
Retiens en ton sein ces milles gouttes tombees des cieux
Et transforme-les en mille fleurs.

A cet instant, nous existons et je rends grace a cette vie. En mars de cette annee, du fait du tremblement de terre dans le Nord du Japon et de la catastrophe nucleaire qui s’en est suivi, des milliers de personnes ont tout perdu. Si ce tremblement de terre avait eu lieu dans la region du Kansai, j’aurais sans doute moi-meme vecu ce drame. L’idee que j’ai depuis a l’esprit est que ces victimes vivent dans de terribles conditions a notre place et que tous ceux qui ont peri alors sont peut-etre morts a notre place. Partout dans le monde la ou il y a des guerres ou des catastrophes naturelles…oui, c’est peut-etre a notre place qu’ils souffrent ou disparaissent, tous ces hommes, ces animaux, ces plantes…
Voila pourquoi toutes ces vies perdues, je les prends sur moi, je les porte en moi avec respect et compassion et mon v?u est de continuer a les faire vivre par ma danse

In this seminar we will study our body movements through butoh dance.
We are going to use improvisation with the basic principal of butoh and we will
discover the dance of the soul. Then we will experience the dance of our mask
- the social identity. Finally, each of us will create his dance in which his soul and
his mask sometimes will dance in union and sometimes in separation.

Part of the seminar will be dedicated in the use of an actual mask.
The intensive workshop is addressed to dancers, actors, performers, jugglings, and generally to all who love body and movement. To participate we request a cover letter and a CV. Possibility of accommodation and meals

≪ Ma peau me protege-t-elle du monde exterieur ?
Le magma, le substrat rocheux, le sol, l’atmosphere, la magnetosphere ? les strates de la
terre.
Les membranes cellulaires, les organes internes, muscles, os, et le corps… une vague
d’emotion, une couche d’energie… une aura ? la couche interne et externe de notre corps.
Peut-etre n’y a-t-il pas de frontieres entre moi et monde.
Il n’y a que la sensation de plusieurs couches de peau.
Vivre dans l’instant, la danse est basee sur cette juxtaposition de sensations. ≫

Does my skin separate me from the external world ?
Magma, underground bedrock, surface soil,
the atmosphere, the magnetosphere - the layers of the earth.
Membrane of cells, internal organs, muscles, bones, and the body…
a wave of emotion, a layer of energy… aura　- the inner and outer layer of our body.
Perhaps there is no boundary between me and my environment.
There is only the sensation from the many layers of skin.
The life of the moment, the dance begins with this layered sensation.
 
皮が私と外界を分けているのか？
地球にもマグマ、地下岩盤、この地面、そしてその上に空気の層、磁気の層がある。
体にも細胞の皮、内臓の皮、筋肉や骨の皮、そしてこの体表の皮、
そして,この皮膚の上にも層があるのかもしれない....。
それは、空気で感ずる感情の波動、気やエネルギーの層、オーラの層。
この私の皮膚の内側が私の体で、
皮膚から外が外界などという分け隔ては無いのかもしれない.......。
あるのはこの私の皮膚のみならず
その内側外側に幾層にも重なった層(皮)から感ずる感覚だけ。
その場に置かれた生命が、皮の感覚を頼りに踊り始める。
